I was a contributing illustrator and writer for McSweeney’s Illustoria Magazine from 2019-2023 where I was in charge of the regular Jokes and Factoids features. Illustoria is a tri-annual magazine geared toward readers ages 4-12 and the young at heart.

 

Each issue of Illustoria has a theme, and was tasked with curating jokes and writing a Factoids piece to tie into it. This project flexed all my creative muscles at once. Research, writing, thinking about the kids and their grownups who will read it, figuring out an illustration style that would speak to them both, and putting it all together with layout and typography. 

 

Working within a theme pushes me outside of my typical orbit. Along the way, I’ve learned about mantis shrimp, zoo poo, how animals hear music, and tiny art from around the world.
